Many
people develop poor postural habits because of their lifestyles, which
are increasingly sedentary, or due to injuries or inherited conditions
which impair movement.
The speed and
enormous stimulation of modern life also tend to lead us to develop
stress responses, which then become fixed and habitual.
These habits are often unconscious, and can be unhelpful. We tend only
to become aware of them if they cause us pain or discomfort. They also
tend to be very entrenched and hard to change directly.
 Working
with simple, everyday activities such as sitting, standing and walking,
I will show you the way to unravel old patterns of muscle use, and
develop better ones.
The Alexander Technique is taught in one-to-one lessons. You keep your
clothes on and your shoes off. I use my hands to guide you, not only to
help release habitual patterns of tension, but also to help you
experience new ways of moving. Part of the lesson takes place lying on
your back in a semi-supine position.
The use of my hands is gently manipulative but not intrusive. I use
them to encourage your muscles to find their natural resting state and
to show you what that feels like, so that you can learn to find it by
yourself. In due course, you will use The Technique to help yourself.
