How does the Alexander Technique help, and what happens in a lesson?

Sara teaching the Alexander Technique in front of a mirror in our Chiswick studioThe Alexander Technique is taught in one-to-one lessons. You keep your clothes on and your shoes off.

Working with simple, everyday activities such as sitting, standing and walking, I will show you the way to unravel old patterns of muscle use, and develop better ones.

I use my hands to guide you, not only to help release habitual patterns of tension, but also to help you experience new ways of moving. Part of the lesson takes place lying on your back in a semi-supine position.

The use of my hands is gently manipulative but not intrusive. I use them to encourage your muscles to find their natural resting state and to show you what that feels like, so that you can learn to find it by yourself. In due course, you will use The Technique to help yourself.
